Mount Coolum is a suburb on the Sunshine Coast between Noosa and Maroochydore. It is the southern suburb that borders on to the rock called Mount Coolum, which is the world’s second largest rock (behind Uluru) and stands 208 metres in height.

The suburb of Mount Coolum offers proximity to good shopping for essential items and is close to the major shopping of Maroochydore. It has easy access to the hinterland and beach, and in proximity to Mt Coolum public golf course as well as the Coolum Palmer resort. Mount Coolum is an area which also has great proximity to Sunshine Coast Airport, Maroochydore CBD, and easy access to Sunshine Motorway and Bruce Highway. It has traditionally been seen as a more affordable beach suburb, but increasingly in recent years homes are being renovated and it is becoming a more popular area.

The suburb is bounded to the west by the Sunshine Coast Motorway and the east by the David Low Way. Adjacent suburbs include:

  • North (along the coast) – Point Arkwright and Yaroomba
  • West – Yandina and Valdora
  • South (along the coastline) – Marcoola and Mudjimba

It is home to about 4,545 residents living across a range of traditional brick and timber homes, and some low-medium density townhouses and apartments. Towards the back of Mount Coolum there are a very small number of homes on larger rural blocks.

Mount Coolum is considered to be a great place to raise a family. The area is surrounded by the beautiful Mount Coolum, as well as Mount Coolum Golf Club and the beach is a short walk or drive away.

Mount Coolum has limited shopping within the suburb, however there is a small Mount Coolum shopping centre containing an IGA, bakery, coffee shop and small number of specialty shops. Nearby key shopping precincts are in Coolum and include:
  • Coolum Village – has a Coles supermarket, post office, bottle shop, barber, chemist, medical surgery, second hand shops, newsagent along with takeaway food and cafes.
  • Coolum Park Shopping Centre – On South Coolum Rd (at the back of Coolum Beach and close to the Sunshine Motorway), this complex has Woolworths, cafés, a butcher, dentist, chemist, newsagent, bottle shop, medical centre and a Hoyts Kiosk.
  • Coolum Beach Esplanade – along the David Low Way are coffee shops and eateries, clothing, ice cream and surf shops etc.
  • Birtwill St Coolum – close to the beach, this shopping hub features a range of services, retail outlets and food options.

Suburbs south of Mount Coolum which also have their own shopping precincts include Mudjimba and Maroochydore.

Getting around

In terms of public transport options, bus services are the main public transport available to get around Mount Coolum. SunBus buses (a subdivision of TransLink) operate in Mount Coolum, with services running frequently along David Low Way. As with the rest of the Sunshine Coast area, Mount Coolum is renowned for its mild climate and amazing weather almost all year round. It has an average annual temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, the temperature can drop to 10 degrees Celsius overnight but generally, the daytimes are still warm.

Ocean water temperature ranges from 19 degrees in winter to 25 degrees in summer. With this sort of climate, it’s no wonder it’s a very popular place for people wanting to visit or live.
